While the theme of this stein is obviously taken from the Biblical tale of David and Goliath, it appears to have also been intended as a political statement against British colonial expansion. The lions and phrase on Goliath’s shield (motto of the prestigious Royal Order of the Garter) are both British devices, making it clear that Goliath was intended to represent the British Empire. The South African Boers, personified by David, fought in a losing cause for control of South Africa during the Boer Wars (1899-1902).  - Beer Stein Library
