Antique Mettlach Beaker“
Motley Quartet
”
Mold #2368
Decoration #1109
¼ Liter
I have collected beer steins and glasses for over 50 years. Now it is time to downsize a bit, so here is an antique Mettlach beaker (“Becher” in German) depicting a group of four musicians.
This beaker was designed by Heinrich Schlitt, one of Mettlach’s best-known artists. His signature is just below the beer stein on the left.
The beaker is called “Musicians” in the Mettlach Book. However, considering the cat and the chickens are running away from the sound and the ragged look of the players I prefer the motley reference.
The beaker is
¼ liter
capacity,
5 inches
tall and almost
3 inches
wide at the rim.
Condition:
The beaker is in NEAR MINT condition. It has no flakes, flea bites, chips, hairlines, cracks, crazing or staining. The interior is a milky white. There is a tiny piece of something beige embedded in the interior glaze at the bottom (factory flaw) and a few craze lines by the Mercury Mark.
Markings:
The beaker has standard Mettlach markings. The mold number (2368), quality control number (26) and year code (05 for 1905) are impressed in the bottom. The Mettlach Mercury mark is stamped in green. The decoration number (1109) and “GESCHUTZT” (Protected) are stamped in black.
