Coin History
As the most conditionally challenging type in the Three-Cent Silver series, the Type II design is understandably important in proof format. Struck in an era before the U.S. Mint's plans to market specimen coinage met with widesperad success, it is also a rare type. In fact, none of these issues have reported mintages, and they were probably produced in very limited numbers as strong numismatic demand simply did not exist in the United States of the mid-to-late 1850s. Today, survivors of the specimen Three-Cent Silver deliveries from 1854-1858 are rightly regarded as important rarities from the earlier years of proof production in the Philadelphia Mint.
